Claude Can Now Read Your Bank Account: Anthropic Adds Personal Finance Through Plaid
Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude on November 5. Subscribers in the United States on the Pro, Max or Ultra plans can now link their bank and card accounts through Plaid and ask Claude about their money in plain language: where it went this month, whether a charge looks wrong, or what an APR has cost them this year. Access is read-only. Claude can read balances and up to two years of transactions, but it cannot move, manage or invest a cent.
The feature is the most sensitive data Claude has ever been allowed to see. Anthropic's answer to that is a set of hard limits, stated in the announcement itself, and a promise that carries weight precisely because it costs Anthropic money: no ads, no sponsored recommendations, and no credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own to sell you.
What Claude can see in your accounts
Anthropic publishes exactly what Claude sees for each connected account. The list is short: the bank name; the account name, type and last four digits; balances and credit limits; and up to two years of transactions. You can link up to 16 banks, including credit card, loan and investment accounts, but for investments, loans and cards Claude reads only balances and limits, not holdings or trades.
Accounts are linked through Plaid, the service many finance apps use to connect to banks. You sign in to your bank inside Plaid, so Claude never asks for or sees your bank password. The connection is made only when you approve it, and you choose which accounts to share.
What it cannot do, and what Anthropic promises
Claude cannot transfer money, pay a bill, cancel a subscription or make an investment through the feature, and the tool is not designed to give investment advice. Personal Finance carries no ads or sponsored recommendations, and Anthropic is not pairing it with its own financial products. That design matches the ad-free policy Anthropic published on February 4, 2026, when it said Claude's responses would not be influenced by advertisers or contain unsolicited third-party product placements.
Anthropic also says conversations inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models and are not added to Claude's shared memory. And it prints the caveat in the same announcement: Claude can make mistakes in its answers, so ask which transactions are behind a number, and check important figures with your bank.
Who gets it, and who does not
Personal Finance is rolling out gradually this week as a beta, and only in the United States. It covers Claude on the web, Claude Desktop, and the iOS and Android apps, on personal Pro, Max and Ultra subscriptions. Free, Team and Enterprise plans are excluded, and only US banks can be linked. Outside the US, Anthropic says the Personal Finance page does not appear at all, even on a VPN, and it has given no date for other countries.
Two smaller limits are worth knowing. Personal Finance is unavailable in Claude Duet, and data exports do not yet include saved dashboards. The rollout is gradual, so eligible subscribers may not see it yet.
Why now, and what came before
Claude is not first to this idea. Perplexity shipped its Plaid-powered finance integration on April 9, and ChatGPT Finances launched on May 15, also on Plaid. Claude arrives almost six months after ChatGPT, on the exact same plumbing, which makes the comparison easy for users and uncomfortable for Anthropic: the differentiator has to be trust, not timing.
The launch was also trailed in public. TestingCatalog reported leaks of the feature on September 14 and October 19, so the announcement confirms something many watchers already expected. Reuters notes the rollout comes ahead of Anthropic's highly anticipated initial public offering, and Anthropic is inviting banks and financial firms to help shape how the feature might work alongside them.
The question to ask before linking
Read-only access limits what can go wrong, but it does not limit what Claude can see. Two years of transactions is a detailed map of a life: where you eat, where you travel, what you pay for and when. Before linking an account, check which accounts you are sharing, remember that you can revoke the connection, and verify any number Claude gives you against your bank. The feature is useful precisely because it answers from your real money, and that is also the reason to treat the link as a decision, not a default.
